About Smoker Art
How the Idea Started
Many years ago, I had the idea of making things from what I called “man-made stone” — also known as artisan stone or artisan concrete. My original plans involved patio tabletops with intricate designs, mosaics, and other decorative pieces. Like a lot of good ideas, though, there never seemed to be enough time to actually get started.
Fast-forward to 2023, when another idea hit me: Why isn’t anyone making water pipes out of this material?
So I decided to find out whether it could be done.
What followed was three years of experimenting, designing, testing, failing, redesigning, and developing my own methods for working with the material. The result is Smoker Art: a collection of weird, whimsical, functional artisan stone water pipes unlike anything I had seen before.
Why Artisan Stone
Artisan stone is an extremely fine, naturally bone-white concrete used for artistic and architectural applications. It captures fine details with remarkable precision and is the kind of material craftsmen use for highly detailed architectural restoration work.
It also happens to make a pretty incredible water pipe.
Artisan stone has a substantial, satisfying weight and is strong enough for thin, detailed castings. Once sealed with a food-grade sealer, the finished piece is waterproof.
And there’s another benefit I discovered along the way: artisan stone can be chilled. Put the entire water pipe in the refrigerator before use and the stone helps keep both the piece and the water inside cooler for longer — no ice needed.
How Each Piece Is Made
Every Smoker Art piece starts as an idea.
Depending on the design, I either sculpt the original by hand in clay or create it digitally in CAD and 3D print the master. That original is then used to create a silicone mold using a mold-making system I developed specifically for these pieces.
Once the mold is complete, liquid artisan stone is mixed and cast into it. This is also the stage where pigment is added to create the customer’s chosen base color. The cast piece is allowed to cure for several days before being removed, inspected, and hand-finished.
Artwork, secondary colors, and other specialized treatments are then applied using techniques and tools I developed for the process. After additional curing time, the entire piece is sealed with a food-grade sealer and allowed to cure again before it is ready for final assembly and shipping.
The customization doesn’t stop with the stone. Every silicone mouthpiece is designed and handmade in my studio, and the glass downstems and bowls are custom-made to my specifications.
From the original design to the finished smoking piece, every Smoker Art water pipe is made from the ground up with its own purpose-built components.
Custom Colors
Artisan stone naturally cures to a beautiful bone-white finish, but not everybody wants their piece in white.
Smoker Art currently offers 13 standard color choices, plus a Custom Color Request option. On our straight water pipes, you can choose one color for the body and a completely different color for the raised artwork, giving you a huge number of possible combinations.
Some designs will also offer additional finishes and treatments as the collection grows.
Built Different on Purpose
Nearly every Smoker Art water pipe is made to order, by hand, for the person who ordered it.
The goal is simple: I want you to own something you had a hand in creating — something with its own personality that doesn’t look like every other piece sitting on a shelf.
The designs come from my imagination. Some are weird. Some are whimsical. Some are a little creepy. All of them are intended to be distinctive.
Every finished piece is functional art: designed to be used, built to perform, and interesting enough to display when it isn’t in use. Whether it’s sitting on a shelf, a coffee table, or right in the middle of the room, a Smoker Art piece is supposed to look like something worth noticing.
